The market is calling this one 50/50, be that Slovakia and Wales are offered at identical odds. However, the market also suggests there is a slightly lower chance of a draw between both sides but this is an incremental difference. The bottom line is this, both these teams can easily win this match and both these teams can readily play to a stalemate so we are going to go where we can get the most bang for our buck: the draw.
We can’t help but admire the searing and scorching run the Slovaks are putting together. The Slovaks are on a roll and remain undefeated in their last seven fixtures, defeating teams like Germany and Switzerland along the way. The Slovaks also own draws against any national team that came off the island of Ireland, which shows us this team can find themselves entrenched in a stalemate fairly easily. A team of Wales’ caliber likely stacks up with the likes of Northern Ireland or Ireland. However, the Welsh do sport a true playmaker in midfielder Garreth Bale.
What scares us most about Wales is the fact they absolutely owned Belgium in qualification. Belgium is the highest ranked team in the FIFA Rankings in this tournament, yet Wales managed to secure four points against the Belgians with seeming ease. However, as a recent it seems the Welsh have taken a step back as they have lost four of their last six friendlies and they have struggled mightily to score at all. Bosnia and Herzegovina, Ukraine and Sweden all blanked the Welsh and managed to score six goals against them in the process.
Slovakia are stronger on defense and thus this game can end up being a long day at the office for the Welsh. We are simply playing this market from a reactionary angle, as most of the consensus are staying off the draw and picking either side. The stock in Slovakia is likely at a high point, conversely the stock in the Welsh are at a low point but the price for either side remains identical. Thus, the true value is found in the draw as this market is likely indicative of the anticipated expectation of such a result coming to fruition.
With this being said, we will go ahead and go where the quality lies and take the draw. If Slovakia had posted marginal results and not been on a tear, coupled with the Welsh putting together amiable outcomes in their own right, we may have been able to secure Slovakia at a friendlier price. With this being said, it is not unforeseeable to imagine this game resulting in a draw. For both sides, Russia may appear to be a key three points to bolster each other’s campaign and a draw in this contest forces either side to play their best game against Group B favorite England. With this being said, the affair can be all the more conservative and a draw is not by any means an unsafe bet.
