Another Group C fixture that has the makings to be a treat, Poland and Northern Ireland could be a poor man’s rendition of the tale of the unstoppable force against the immovable object. Poland likes to score goals and has done so at a rate that has caused many to bat eyebrows. On the contrary, Northern Ireland has been methodical in their approach and they like to play defense.
First, let us discuss the Polish scoring machine. This is a team that fostered 15 total goals against Gibraltar, 4 against Iceland in one contest and 5 against Finland in one fixture. Results of this magnitude can create fanfare and pandemonium at proliferate levels. Let us not forget the Polish cultivated impressive results against Germany in qualification, defeating the Group C favorites by a score of 2-0. To the naked eye Poland has all the makings of a sleeper team and we would normally buy in to that if we didn’t have a team like Northern Ireland lurking in the same group.
In stealth fashion, Northern Ireland assembled a remarkably impressive qualification campaign. In their last eleven games, Northern Ireland remains unbeaten and they have fostered some eyebrow raising results against Romania, Greece and Hungary. Northern Ireland won their qualification group outright with 21 points, usurping Romania and Hungary who may for all intent and purposes have been the crowd favorites in that race. This is a side that forced 16 goals in qualification while only giving up 8, bolstering the ideal strategy to combat the Polish siege works.
The odds once again do not reflect market expectation. Northern Ireland is forecasted at 33:1 to win Group C, Poland is 9/2. Given the set up here, the presumption would be that Poland would require a bit more juice and Northern Ireland would be positioned as a bit more of a longshot. No such thing has occurred. With regard to Northern Ireland, draws are in the playbook of that other team from the Emerald Isle. In their last six fixtures, Northern Ireland has drawn on three occasions.
While it is tempting to go in outright for Northern Ireland, there is more value in playing on a draw simply because Northern Ireland loves to play the goal differential game and scoff points. Furthermore, Northern Ireland has drawn Poland before and cooled down the incendiary assault of the Polish. Poland fostered some impressive scoring but it was against marginal competition. While some may view this fixture as a tune-up for Poland to prepare for Ukraine and Germany, that can turn out to be a very dangerous assumption. Northern Ireland as we mentioned is a group winner in preliminary qualification and they belong in this tournament. This squad is by no means a sacrificial lamb to be fed to a European mid-major and Poland if they haven’t known this already will be certainly stepping up the level of competition from Gibraltar. We won’t call for the upset, but a draw is likely plausible if Northern Ireland dictates the pace of this affair and there is no reason to suggest why they cannot. Given the odds offered here, we will once again lay a favorite and play where the value lies.
