With all the hype and scrutiny surrounding the Cleveland Cavaliers, the Celtics have slipped under the radar but are nonetheless a juicy option for the Eastern Conference outright. The Celtics enter as a five seed, runner up to the Toronto Raptors for the Atlantic Division title. Boston is one of the most improved teams in the NBA, entering the post-season with an impressive 48-34 record after failing to clinch a berth last season. Boston’s offense when firing at all cylinders is lethal. Led by a prolific point guard in Isaiah Thomas, the Celtics light up scoreboards averaging 105.7 points per game while also bagging 44.6 offensive rebounds per game. The Celtics are one of the best free-throw shooting teams in the league and excellent at throwing off the shooting abilities of the opposition. In the NBA, there is not a team that is better at disrupting field goal efficiency than the Atlanta Hawks. On the contrary, the Hawks place toward the bottom of the pack in rebound production which affords opponents more chances to score. This is a wrinkle that Boston will take advantage of, as they have all season long. As we have highlighted previously, the Celtics are very good at creating second and third chances and while much of the basketball world marvels in forward Paul Millsap and center Al Horford, the presence of Jared Sullinger and Amir Johnson can be a disruptive force for Atlanta’s front-court. When dissecting the series even further, the edge in experience rests with the Hawks. However, Atlanta is haunted by the ghost of playoffs past as Atlanta’s most recent playoff memory was a bitter pill to swallow. The Hawks were ousted from the playoffs last year in the Eastern Conference Finals against the then #2 Cleveland Cavaliers. Cleveland decimated Atlanta and set the Hawks packing in a four game sweep despite Atlanta owning home-court advantage throughout the first three rounds. How this previous outcome effects the psyche of the Hawks starting personnel is yet to be seen but for many Celtics players this is their first trip to the post-season. Overall Boston has already had a productive season matched by charted progress. Any achievements at this point are simply icing on the cake and for this reason Boston will likely enter this series loose and unafraid which is the perfect recipe for a team to go deep in to the playoffs. Boston will enter with nothing to lose and everything to gain and continue to play their fast-paced, fun-filled style of offense that propelled them to the post-season. With this being said, the free-rolling mindset of Boston will likely catapult them toward a series victory as young teams are often fearless when facing teams of Atlanta’s caliber and stature. The true question mark is Atlanta’s approach and with this in consideration there is more value in Boston.
