Wales for all intent and purposes should have at least four points in the Group B campaign. They own a win over Slovakia which can certainly raise many eyebrows considering Wales is regarded as the new kid on the EURO block. The Welsh followed this up with a tantalizing attack on England, where they fought valiantly and fell to a late go-ahead goal by England. The English have had the luck of the Irish in this tournament, but Wales have shown that they are quite the formidable outfit. Enter Russia, a team that remains winless in their last five fixtures yet they are pitched as the defacto favorite in this affair. We are still scratching our heads as to why. The Russians as we have championed previously should have had their doors blown off by England. It was England’s lack of initiative and effort that allowed the Russians to hang around and secure a late equalizer. In their second Group B fixture, Russia was shown no mercy by Slovakia and they fell decisively as a result. Now this same team that was defeated by the team that Wales beat (Slovakia), is favored to win over Wales. This sounds like a riddle with no positive conclusion. Initially, we were keen in once again going back on Wales because we perceived the public may want no part of the Welsh after their loss to England. However, reports have indicated otherwise and thus we will simply fade the consensus in that capacity. For Russia, we have no love. The draw seems to be the most qualitative option on the board here. Wales can easily win this game be that Russia has a terrible defense but what remains to be seen is how Wales approaches this game be that it is a “secure a point” or go home scenario. What is even more shocking for the Welsh is that they can actually win this group if England loses and they emerge triumphant. It remains to be seen how Wales will respond to this and a draw will almost guarantee the Welsh are through to the next round. As a result, the Welsh may approach this fixture with a bit more caution. For Russia, the Russians need to win and win big to have any chance of moving forward in this competition. A draw will not get them forward but they simply do not have the defensive prowess to protect leads, therefore we expect them to vulnerable to scoring.
